About me

What I do

I’m a former corporate lawyer whose primary interest has always been in business, rather than the law.

I have worked with hundreds of entrepreneurs and executives. Whether they were starting, growing or selling their company, I was intrigued by what the experience was like for them. This means, in the words of many of my clients, that I “get it”.

it’s been a breath of fresh air to talk to someone who just gets it

My story

Image of London city

Act 1 – The City

After studying French and Italian at Edinburgh University, I went to Nottingham Law School before joining Allen & Overy as a trainee solicitor. During my 11 years at Allen & Overy in London and Milan, I worked on plenty of big, international deals; but I also sought out roles that would broaden my business experience.

  • I supported the Senior and Managing Partners in the restructuring of the firm in the wake of the global financial crisis – I know what it is like to deal with crises and extreme situations.
  • In 2006, I spent two years as the HR Manager for the firm’s Trainees (all 240 of them) – and so my belief in the power of coaching was born.
  • I was seconded to advise the chairman and board of a listed company while it dealt with a hostile takeover bid from its CEO – a role that required a significant amount of integrity and discretion.

Act 2 - Wales

I am a fluent Welsh speaker and being Welsh is a big part of my identity; fortunately, I was able to persuade my husband to leave East London to relocate to Cardiff, where we now live by the sea with our two sons.

From 2015 to 2020, I was a partner at Capital Law, where I specialised in advising managers of private equity-backed businesses. I played a key part in the growth of the firm, building high-performing teams and relationships with great clients. I was identified as a leading individual in the Legal 500 2020, the only female corporate lawyer in Wales to make the cut.

I am Vice Chair of the Welsh Government’s Expert Panel Supporting Entrepreneurial Women and a Trustee of The Aloud Charity.

Act 3 – Executive coaching and mentoring

In 2020, I became accredited as an ILM Level 7 Executive Coach and Mentor.

These days I still work with Founders, executives and lawyers and other professionals, but with the express aim of helping them move forward with their careers, achieve their business goals, and lead more fulfilled lives.

For me, this is far more rewarding than negotiating another investment agreement!

Alys supported me throughout a long and complex transaction. Balancing the competing demands of a corporate deal and the day job is a challenge, even for the most seasoned senior executive. Alys is warm, tenacious and has a wealth of relevant experience: having her on hand to talk through whatever happened to be on my plate really helped me stay focused. She would be a valuable addition to any deal team.
